Progesterone – The Unsung Hero of Women’s Health

Did you know that progesterone is one of the few hormones that also functions as a neurosteroid? It can be converted into a neuroactive compound called allopregnanolone, which interacts with GABA-A receptors in the brain, the same calming pathway involved in relaxation, sleep, and stress regulation. Strange, isn’t it?

For years, we’ve been taught to think of progesterone primarily as the “pregnancy hormone.” Yet its influence extends far beyond reproduction. Progesterone communicates with your brain, nervous system, immune system, metabolism, bones, and even your gut. It can influence how well you sleep, how resilient you feel under stress, and how clearly you think.

And that’s where I believe we’ve missed an important part of the conversation.

Have you ever felt exhausted despite getting enough rest, struggled to sleep even when you’re tired, noticed unusual mood changes, or felt like brain fog was making simple tasks harder? These symptoms can have many causes, but fluctuating or inadequate progesterone can be one piece of the puzzle.

So, let’s rewrite the narrative around progesterone.

Your luteal phase is much more than a countdown to your next period. It’s a phase where progesterone rises, influencing everything from your reproductive system to your brain and metabolism. Understanding what happens when progesterone is low and how nutrition and lifestyle can support hormonal health, can change the way you look at your cycle.

What is Progesterone and Why Does It Matter?

Progesterone is a steroid hormone made from cholesterol. After ovulation, the follicle that released the egg transforms into a temporary endocrine gland called the corpus luteum, which becomes the body’s main source of progesterone during the luteal phase. It supports bone health, interacts with thyroid and immune function, influences metabolism, and works alongside estrogen to regulate the menstrual cycle. During the first half of the cycle, estrogen rises to support follicle development and prepare the uterine lining. After ovulation, progesterone rises and becomes the dominant hormone of the luteal phase, helping stabilise the uterine lining and support the body if conception occurs. Interestingly, progesterone is also associated with a small rise in resting energy expenditure during the luteal phase. This may partly explain why appetite can increase before your period, your body may genuinely be using slightly more energy.

During the luteal phase, the 10–14 days between ovulation and your next period, progesterone should rise. When it doesn’t rise adequately, some women may notice:

  • Mood swings 

  • Poor sleep -lighter, restless sleep or difficulty staying asleep.

  • Bloating and fluid retention – particularly in the days before your period.

  • Breast tenderness or sensitivity.

  • Changes in bowel habits around the luteal phase.

  • Premenstrual spotting before your period.

  • Heavier or more painful periods.

  • Shorter or irregular cycles over time.

The most fascinating role of progesterone happens in your brain. It  can cross the blood-brain barrier and be converted into allopregnanolone, which influences GABA-A receptors involved in calming and nervous-system regulation. When it naturally declines before menstruation, during anovulatory cycles, or throughout perimenopause, this neurological support also changes. For some women, this may contribute to increased anxiety, poorer sleep, emotional sensitivity, or more intense PMS.

Another overlooked relationship is the connection between the gut and progesterone. When the gut is inflamed or nutrient absorption is compromised, it can make it harder for the body to maintain healthy hormonal function. Progesterone can influence gut motility, immune function, and inflammation. 

The Estrogen – Progesterone Imbalance 

Sometimes, estrogen levels may be within a normal range, but progesterone doesn’t rise adequately after ovulation. This creates a relative imbalance between estrogen and progesterone, which may contribute to symptoms such as PMS, bloating, breast tenderness, and mood changes.

Your gut also plays a role in hormone balance. Healthy digestion and regular bowel movements support the body’s natural elimination of hormones, including estrogen. When gut health or bowel regularity is compromised, this process may be affected.

That’s why my approach is  on supporting the gut first, providing the nutrients needed for healthy hormone production, increasing fibre intake, and regulating the nervous system through practices such as breathwork.

The Perimenopause Shift

During our peak reproductive years, cycles tend to follow a more predictable rhythm. But as you enter perimenopause, ovarian function becomes less consistent. Your brain continues sending signals to the ovaries to mature an egg, but the ovaries don’t always respond smoothly. This can lead to more frequent anovulatory cycles, where you still experience a period but don’t actually release an egg. And without ovulation, progesterone production can be significantly reduced that month.

Meanwhile, estrogen doesn’t simply decline. It can fluctuate drastically, with periods of higher and lower levels. This combination of fluctuating estrogen and declining or inconsistent progesterone leads to classic perimenopausal symptoms such as heavy or irregular periods, hot flashes, night sweats, mood changes, and sleep disturbances.

How I Support Healthy Progesterone in My Practice

One of the biggest shifts I’ve made in my practice is moving away from chasing a single hormone. Instead of asking, “How do I increase progesterone?” I ask, “What does your body need to produce it naturally?” You can’t eat progesterone; your body has to make it, and that requires the right environment.

I begin with the gut, because inflammation and poor nutrient absorption can interfere with overall hormonal health. Depending on the individual, this may mean identifying foods that trigger symptoms, such as gluten, dairy, or soy, while supporting digestion and microbial balance. I also encourage reducing unnecessary exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals, such as avoiding heating food in plastic and choosing glass or stainless steel when possible.

Once the foundation is in place, I focus on nutrients that support healthy ovulation and progesterone production:

  • Vitamin B6: Supports steroid hormone metabolism and neurotransmitter production. Food sources include bananas, potatoes, chickpeas, sunflower seeds, and walnuts.

  • Zinc: Supports reproductive function and healthy ovulation, which is essential for progesterone production. Sources include pumpkin seeds, chickpeas, and cashews.

  • Magnesium: Supports nervous-system regulation, sleep, and the body’s response to stress. Sources include leafy greens, almonds, pumpkin seeds, cacao, and avocados.

  • Vitamin C: Supports normal ovarian function and protects cells from oxidative stress. Sources include kiwi, strawberries, oranges, guava, bell peppers, and broccoli.

Nutrition is only one part of the equation. I also work on nervous-system regulation through practices such as meditation, box breathing, or EFT. These aren’t quick fixes for hormonal imbalances, but they can support stress regulation and create a healthier environment for ovulation and hormone production.

Ultimately, it’s about giving your body the right conditions to do what it was designed to do naturally: nourish it well, support the gut, regulate stress, and protect healthy ovulation.

The Bottomline
